Burma's opposition leader Ms Aung San Suu Kyi has been successfully operated on for gynaecological problems at a private hospital in the capital Yangon.
Japan's Kyodo news agency said the Nobel Laureate had been hospitalised at the private Asia Royal Hospital and had undergone the operation on her uterus this morning.
Burma's military junta has kept Ms Suu Kyi (58), at an undisclosed location since May 30th, after a bloody clash between her convoy and government supporters in northern Burma.
The junta says she is being held for her own protection and has ignored an international outcry over her detention, saying it will free her when political temperatures cool.
Special envoys from the United Nations and Indonesia are awaiting permission to visit Burma to check on Ms Suu Kyi's condition and press for her release.
The United States had said Ms Suu Kyi was on a hunger strike but last week the Red Cross said she was well and not fasting.
