Gardaí in Limerick confirmed last night that no complaint had been made following a vicious assault during a funeral in the city at the weekend.
One man suffered head injuries after he was struck with a wheel brace when a fracas between members of feuding factions broke out at a graveyard.
The incident is the latest in an escalation of tensions between families involved in a bitter Limerick feud.
Gardaí at Roxboro Road said they went to the cemetery on Saturday afternoon following reports of the incident but all the parties involved had left and no formal complaint was made.
It is understood that the family of the deceased have no involvement in the ongoing feud and that the fight broke out when members of the feuding factions met by chance at the funeral.
Witnesses said they were "disgusted" by the violent incident.
"Funerals are a time when a family should be allowed to mourn in peace. This kind of behaviour is a disgrace and it shows absolutely no respect for anyone," said one eyewitness. The victim of the assault was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where he was treated for head injuries and later discharged.
There have been up to 100 serious incidents in the ongoing feud since the murder of Eddie Ryan in Limerick 2½ years ago.
Last week two men - Ross Cantillon and Roy Woodland - were each jailed for seven years after they were convicted of a drive-by shooting.
Five other men are currently before the courts charged in connection with the murder of Kieran Keane last January.
