MacEochaidh to seek nomination

The barrister and anti-corruption campaigner Mr Colm MacEochaidh has announced he is to seek a nomination to run for the European Parliament for Fine Gael in Dublin, writes Mark Brennock.

Mr MacEochaidh stood unsuccessfully for the party in Dublin South East in last year's general election. He came to prominence as one of two environmental campaigners who offered a reward to any person providing information leading to a criminal conviction of anyone for land rezoning corruption. This ultimately led to the establishment of the Flood tribunal.

The Dublin seats are currently held by Mr Niall Andrews (FF), Ms Mary Banotti (FG), Mr Proinsias De Rossa (Labour) and Ms Patricia McKenna (Green Party).

North-South safety campaign

Health and safety groups in the Republic and Northern Ireland are to join forces in an effort to tackle fatalities in the construction sector. The new cross-Border initiative yesterday said 220 workers lost their lives on the island of Ireland in the 10 years from 1993 to 2002, writes Conor Lally.

Of that total, 173 deaths occurred in the Republic, with 47 workers losing their lives in Northern Ireland over the same period. Almost half (93) of the deaths resulted from falls from heights.

The cross-Border initiative is to launch a major project aimed at combating falls from heights. It will involve the Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland (HSENI) joining forces with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

The campaign is part of a Europe-wide safety drive in the building sector sponsored by the EU Committee of Senior Labour Inspectors.
