New funding arrangements have been announced by the Minister for the Environment for local authorities to establish an archives service. Mr Howlin was launching the report of the Local Authority Records and Archives steering group.

As part of the new funding, local authorities will be able to claim a subsidy from the Department towards the salary of qualified archivists whom they contract. A small amount of funding will also be available to local authorities for temporary premises which are to be used for processing archives.

Mr Howlin said local authorities were obliged to provide proper management, custody and conservation of local records and archives.
