Johnny Murtagh has decided to finish the Irish Flat season six days early and bring an end to a campaign in which he was dogged by weight problems following a fall at Royal Ascot.
The rider took a three-week break in August to have treatment on a back injury which had prevented him from maintaining his strict fitness regime.
He was back in the saddle in time to partner Alamshar for his boss John Oxx in the Irish Champion Stakes in early September.
Murtagh's agent Eddie Byrne said: "Johnny has no specific plans to ride abroad during the winter. He's not looking for anything, just trying to let the body mend.
Oxx confirmed: "Johnny's not riding for the rest of the season, which ends next Sunday anyway.
"He felt he needed a break and he's been looking forward to it all season.
"As we know, the weight has been difficult all season. It doesn't take too much to shove him over 9st.
Murtagh. who has had 65 winners in Ireland this season, was last in action at Naas a week last Sunday, the day after he rode on Newmarket's Champions' Day programme.
