Motorists have been warned to take extra care on the roads and put off unnecessary journeys after forecasts of storm force winds this evening and tonight.

A severe weather warning has been issued by Met Éireann, which expects stormy conditions to extend northwards. Winds of up to 80 miles per hour are predicted in some areas along with heavy rain and coastal flooding.

A spokeswoman for Met Éireann told ireland.coma storm depression was situated off the south west of Ireland. She said strong winds and heavy rain can be expected in the southern counties today.

However later this evening and tonight south easterly winds will eventually give way to westerly winds with storms forecast for the north east, including Dublin.

She said the storm surge would bring high seas, seven-eight metres in some places, and many areas can expect flooding.

Warnings have been issued to local authorities on the risk of structural damage. Motorists have been warned of the dangers of fallen trees and other debris. A number of ferry sailings are set to be cancelled. The poor weather conditions and storms are forecast to abate later tomorrow.

The National Safety Council said motorists should listen to news and weather broadcasts before making any journey. The council also said if conditions became very bad, motorists should avoid making journeys unless it absolutely necessary. "If you have to make the journey tell someone at your destination what time you expect to arrive," a statement said.

The Council also advised drivers to drive with care and caution and watch for fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road. Drivers are also advised to allow extra distance from the vehicle in front, to use dipped headlights at all times of poor visibility

"Vulnerable Road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are advised to remain indoors and avoid making a journey in such extreme weather conditions," the statement added.
