The Dubliner, bidding to win event for a fourth time, holds a one stroke lead over Gary Murphy, who carded a course record 66 at the Co Limerick venue.

Michael Hoey and David Higgins are a shot further back on three-under par.

McGinley has won the Irish PGA Championship on three previous occasions, last year in the weather-shortened event at Westport and also in 2000 (Co Louth) and 1997 (Westport).
