Ireland's Garth McGimpsey has been reappointed as captain of the Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club for a further two years.

The Bangor amateur led the home side to an unprecedented third win in a row against the Americans in the bi-annual amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup at Ganton GC in England last month.

McGimpsey's extended reign will also include the St Andrews Trophy match against the Continent of Europe to be played at Nairn GC in August 2004.

The former Walker Cup player will then lead his team to the 2005 Walker Cup where they will defend against the Americans at Chicago GC, Wheaton in Illinois.

Since taking over the captaincy from the highly successful Peter McEvoy in 2001, McGimpsey also led the team to success in the 2002 St Andrews Trophy in Lausanne.

McGimpsey boasts an outstanding playing record in his own right. He won the Amateur Championship at Royal Dornoch in 1985, and many other titles in Ireland while representing his country between 1978 and 1999.

As a Walker Cup player, he helped GB&I to their first win on US soil in 1989 and also played on the 1985 and 1991 teams.
