A man died and two others were taken by rescue helicopter to Tralee General Hospital after their small open fishing boat capsized in high swells on Brandon Bay on the Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry at lunchtime yesterday.

The men were on a leisure rodangling trip at the time in a 16-ft open boat in the bay. The dead man is believed to be from the Tralee area.

Valentia Coastguard received a 999 call at around 1.20 p.m. telling them a boat had overturned. Two units of the Fenit lifeboat were launched and quickly reached the scene.

The three victims, including the dead man, were washed onto the shore on the surf. The Dingle coast guard had also been tasked, as well as the ambulance and the Shannon Marine Rescue Sikorsky helicopter. The helicopter brought the survivors to Tralee General Hospital. One man was discharged last night and the other was detained. He was in a stable condition. A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the dead man at Tralee Hospital.
