A 26-year-old man, Hua Yu Feng, was last night charged with the murder of Chinese student Wang Xiang Yi (21), who was found stabbed to death at Woodbrook Glen, Bray, Co Wicklow, on July 4th, at a special sitting of Bray District Court.
Mr Feng, with an address at Woodbrook Glen, Bray, who was described as a student, was remanded in custody to appear at Bray District Court next Friday.
Accused denies murdering father
A murder trial jury has been sworn in to try a Dublin man accused of murdering his father in October 2001.
When arraigned at the Central Criminal Court yesterday Mr Anthony McAuliffe (43), Rosevale Court, Brookwood Glen, Artane, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr John Tony McAuliffe (71) at Rosevale Court between 27 October and 30 October 2001.
The jury of seven women and five men will today begin hearing evidence at the Central Criminal Court.
Young Munster case adjourned
A legal challenge by the director of Rugby at Limerick's Young Munster Rugby Club to the proposed termination of his employment from June 30th last was again adjourned yesterday at the High Court.
On June 27th, Mr Rowly Williams, Fitzhaven Square, Limerick, was granted leave to bring proceedings against the club's executive committee.The court also granted a temporary injunction restraining the club from terminating Mr Williams' appointment.Mr Williams (42) took up his position with Young Munster in August 2002
Portmarnock hearing adjourned
The case being taken by the Equality Authority against Portmarnock Golf Club, Dublin, on discrimination against women, has been adjourned to July 23rd when a date will be set for the hearing.
In Dublin District Court the authority yesterday alleged that because of the its rules on women's membership, it is a "discriminating club" under the Equal Status Act 2000.
It also sought an order suspending the club's certificate of registration for up to 30 days, which would in effect suspend its liquor licence.
The club denies the authority's case.
Security van driver jailed
A Securicor employee who helped stage the robbery of over €260,000 from the company van he was driving has been jailed for five years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Jonathan Mahony (26), St John's Gate, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to larceny on October 11th, 2001 at Shelbourne Place, Dublin and to knowingly making false a statement to gardaí.
Two charged over drugs seizure
Two men were sent for trial by a judge yesterday at Co Monaghan court on charges relating to a €5m drugs seizure on the continent last year.
Mr Michael Howard (34) Knocklong, Co Limerick, and Mr Morgan McGrath (32) Bransha, Co Tipperary, were charged at a sitting of Carrickmacross District Court with conspiring, with others, inside and outside the Republic, to unlawfully import drugs, contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act between August 28th and 31st last year. Both men were granted bail.
