A major programme to clean up Lough Ree is to get under way involving eight projects costing £16 million. The projects represent the first stage of the EU Cohesion Fund-assisted Lough Ree Catchment Protection Scheme.
A £3.6 million sewage treatment plant is to be built for Roscommon town, which will provide secondary treatment, new sewers, phosphorous reductions and sludge treatment facilities. Work is also scheduled to begin at Ballyjamesduff later this year and the Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, said yesterday he was anxious that the local authorities hurry the planning and design of schemes at Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, Ballymahon, Granard and Longford.
