LONDON - British ferry operators, freight companies and police were last night keeping a close watch on Channel ports after French lorry drivers staged two short blockades along the coast, just hours before threatened strike action was due to start.

Local drivers appeared to be beginning protests a day earlier than planned, as most of the unions called off strikes after reaching agreement with the French government.
