London's postal service has suffered serious disruption after workers staged a 24-hour walkout in a dispute over pay.

Royal Mail today said picket lines in central London had kept 29 out of every 30 postmen and women away from work as the Communication Workers Union took action over living allowances.

The CWU announced last week that its 30,000 members in the capital would go on strike in a protest over London weighting.

The union has called for the allowance to be raised to £4,000 a year, from £3,281 in currently in inner London and £2,038 in outer London.

Earlier this month, postal workers across Britain voted narrowly against staging the country's first national mail strike in seven years.
