Thieves caused more than €10,000 worth of damage to a supermarket in Limerick yesterday during an early morning ram-raid.
A jeep was driven through the front door of the Spar supermarket in Ballycummin village, Raheen, at 3 a.m. yesterday.
"We believe the intruders were trying to get at the ATM machine, the back of which would be located inside the shop. However as soon as the alarm went off they made a very quick getaway," said a Garda spokesman.
Nothing was taken in the raid. However gardaí say more than €10,000 worth of damage was caused to the shop.
It is understood a four-man gang was involved in the raid. The gang - who all wore balaclavas - made off in a red Nissan Almeira.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have seen the car in the area to contact Roxboro Garda station on (061) 214340.
The jeep which was abandoned at the scene was being examined by gardaí yesterday.
