War crimes prosecutors have demanded a life sentence for a Bosnian Serb general on trial over the siege of Sarajevo that left thousands dead during the Bosnian war.

Stanislav Galic (60) is charged with four counts of crimes against humanity and three counts of war crimes. He is the first Bosnian Serb to stand trial before the UN war crimes court over the events in Sarajevo.

The siege of the Muslim-held city by Bosnian Serb troops was one of the darkest hours of the 1992-95 Bosnian war. Nearly 12,000 people, including over 1,500 children, died over a 44-month period.

The trial ended today but no date has been set for a verdict.
