Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie moved into a share of the lead in the second round of the frost-delayed Madrid Open today.
The 33-year-old, winner of the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie, fired a flawless seven-birdie 64 to finish at nine-under-par 133, level with Australia's Peter Fowler who carded a 66.
Two shots back in a tie for third are home favourite Sergio Garcia, after a 71, and Argentina's Angel Cabrera, who shot a 68.
Lawrie, who had opened with a 69 at Club de Campo, agreed with his coach that he would keep his eyes focused on the ball while putting, rather than on his club as he has always done in the past.
The ploy reaped dividends as he holed one putt from 30 feet early on before completing his round with a swinging 40-footer over a mound.
Overnight leader Paul Casey is among the late starters after the round was delayed by two hours this morning so the course could thaw out.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington dropped off the pace somewhat after carding a second round two-over 73 to sit four under for the tournament.
Gary Murphy is a shot further back but fired a fine 68 today. Peter Lawrie (69) is one over as is Graeme McDowell (played four today) while Paul McGinley is two over after six holes.
