New legislation on working hours will permit young people to work until 11 p.m. at weekends and during school holidays, the Minister of State for Labour Affairs has announced. Ms Eithne Fitzgerald had earlier indicated that they might not work beyond 10 p.m.
She said she had received many representations seeking the extra hour, including some from young people under 18, those who would be directly affected by the new law.
"I know that many young people felt that the current law was considered to be too strict, and as a legislator I believe it is important that the law be respected," said the Minister. "I know that for many students, part time work, especially at weekends, is a necessity."
