Kilmainham District courthouse is due to close at the end of April as part of the reorganisation of the District Court in Dublin.
According to the Courts Service, a consultation process has begun about accommodating the needs of all court users in the Dublin District Court. This process is expected to be complete by April 30th, when court hearings in Kilmainham courthouse will cease, and the cases transferred to city centre venues.
It is likely that existing courts in the Richmond building and in Chancery St, under-utilised at present, will hear most of the additional cases. The former family courts at Riverbank, across the river from the Four Courts, are now available since the transfer of the family courts into a new building in Phoenix St.
It is understood that increased use of new technology in the District Court has also increased the through-put of court documents and made the courts more efficient, allowing for more cases to be processed in each court.
