A book of condolence for Edward Kennedy will remain open for a second day today at the US embassy in Dublin.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Emer Costello, signed the book this morning. In Cork, a book of condolences has been opened in City Hall. It will remain in place for one week until next Friday.

Yesterday,  Taoiseach Brian Cowen and US Ambassador Dan Rooney paid tribute to the late senator, who died on Wednesday after a 15-month struggle with cancer.

Mr Cowen's written message conveyed deepest sympathy to the American people on behalf of the Irish people.

"We have lost a loyal and dear friend who will be remembered with great affection by all of us whose privilege it was to work with him," the message said.

Mr Kennedy's funeral will be held tomorrow at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica.

The Taoiseach will attend a memorial service at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum this evening and the funeral mass at the basilica.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to give the eulogy at the service.

Mr Kennedy, who was first elected a senator in 1962, lay in repose at Boston's John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum yesterday. The public was invited to view his flag-draped casket in the museum that honours his late brother, former US President John F. Kennedy.

Thousands of people lined the roads and overpasses to catch a glimpse of the black hearse bearing his body.
