Fine Gael leader, Mr Enda Kenny has paid warm tribute to his Party's MEP for Munster, Mr John Cushnahan, who has announced that he will not be seeking re-election at next year's European Parliamentary elections.

Fine Gael MEP for Munster, Mr John Cushnahan, who will not be seeking re-election.

Mr Kenny described Mr Cushnahan as a "diligent defender of Ireland's interests" in a wide range of areas including regional policy, agriculture and fisheries.

Mr Cushnahan cited personal reasons for his decision not to seek re-election.

H e has been chosen to represent the European Union on a number of international missions in Sri Lanka, China and Pakistan. He was also a member of the European Convention which drew up the draft Constitutional treaty.
