Flights to and from Tel Aviv's international airport were to resume on this afternoon after workers ended a strike that crippled the airport for 31 hours, an Israel Airports Authority spokeswoman said.

The strike, which left hundreds of passengers stranded, ended after workers and management agreed on a wage increase deal, which also involved some job losses.

The spokeswoman said airport staff would receive a 6.7 per cent rise by the start of 2002 with an additional 0.85 per cent increase in 2003 and 2004.

In exchange, 120 workers will be sacked as part of cost cutting measures, she said.

The strike, involving everyone from baggage handlers to check-in staff, was called yesterday. It was to end after four hours but was extended when talks between management and workers failed to yield results.

Approximately 60 incoming and outgoing flights were affected yesterday leaving as many as 1,000 passengers stranded.
