Two Irish men are fighting for their lives after they were attacked in Australia.
Police in Melbourne arrested a suspect about three hours after the savage assault in the early hours of this morning.
They said the two men received life-threatening head injuries during the incident at a residential address in Lynedoch Avenue, in the St Kilda East area of the city.
“Both men, aged in their 30s, were taken to the Alfred hospital,” said a spokesman.
“Police arrested a third man at the Alfred, where he was being treated for non life-threatening injuries, around 4.30am.
“He remains under armed guard at the hospital.”
It is understood the pair may have been assaulted with a hammer at the boarding house where they lived.
They are in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the men’s families.
Elsewhere, an Irish man is recovering in hospital after he was injured in a shooting in Spain.
The victim, who is believed to be a Dubliner in his late 20s, was shot in a bar in Torremolinos, on the Costa Del Sol, last night.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident but that consular assistance has not been requested.
