Brian Boru gave jockey Jamie Spencer his first victory in a British Classic when winning the Seabiscuit St Leger Stakes at Doncaster today.
The 5-4 favourite, trained in Ireland by Aidan O'Brien, went head-to-head with High Accolade (8-1) in the closing stages and got the upper hand to win by a length-and-a-quarter.
Phoenix Reach was a further length-and-a-half back in third, with Maharib fourth.
O'Brien, who was winning his second St Leger following Milan's success two years ago, said: "Jamie said he was going to put him to sleep and that's what he's done.
"I probably overdid the three-year-olds in the spring and because we gave them a break in the summer, thankfully some of them have come on leaps and bounds.
"Brian Boru is a lovely horse and has plenty of pace, even though this race is a mile and six. He travels well through a race and was a seven-furlong winner at two.
"He can pull up if he gets there, but he has that cruise and if you put him to sleep he can come there on the bit if you can wait on him."
Mark Weld, representing his trainer father Dermot, who won the Irish Field St Leger at the Curragh minutes earlier with Vinnie Roe, said of fourth-placed Maharib: "He's a fine, improving young horse.
"We came here to run a big race and for a moment the Leger double was on the cards. We're delighted - he's run a very good race.
"We'e won the Irish Leger and finished fourth here. That's not a bad day."
