An Iraqi civilian was killed and two US military police were wounded in Baghdad today when an explosion targeted a US convoy in the latest strike on occupation forces.
Hours earlier in a separate incident, attackers lobbed two grenades near US soldiers guarding the Iraqi National Museum. The Americans escaped harm but a shop was damaged. There were no casualties.
"We do not know if it intended to hit our position or to hit that little store that is down there. Both grenades exploded near that store," Sgt John Kuzar, one of the soldiers guarding the museum said.
A US military spokesman said the two wounded Americans from the convoy were evacuated to a military hospital. There were no details of how the Iraqi civilian died.
US forces have been targeted repeatedly in recent days by what senior military officials consider to be loyalists of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, whose 24-year rule was ended by the US-led invasion in April.
At least 22 Americans have been killed by hostile fire since US President George W Bush declared major combat over on May 1st. Two others were found dead in unclear circumstances yesterday, having been missing since Wednesday.
Six British military police were killed in the south of Iraq the day before.
The attacks have also hit Iraqi bystanders. On Friday two Iraqis were injured in a town outside Baghdad when a US convoy was targeted by explosives.
