Pakistani fire killed an Indian
soldier on the disputed Kashmir border, in the first death reported on the heavily militarized Himalayan frontier in nearly two weeks, officials said today.
The soldier was killed last night in an exchange of small-arms fire between Indian and Pakistani troops at the Regal post of Samba sector, 45 kilometers south of Indian-administered Kashmir's winter capital Jammu, a spokesman for the Border Security Force said.
He said the two sides shelled each other's positions in southern Kashmir up to this morning in the Samba, Akhnoor, Hiranagar, Kathua and Ranbir Singh Pura sectors.
The death is the first reported in fighting over the Kashmir frontier since June 18, when police said a civilian on the Indian side was killed in an artillery duel in the southern Rajouri district.
