The €95 million toxic waste incinerator proposed for Ringaskiddy will be the subject of an An Bord Pleanála oral hearing in Cork today.
Belgian waste management company, Indaver Ireland, and residents of the Cork harbour area will have the opportunity to present their arguments for and against the proposal. The hearing is taking place at the Neptune Basketball Arena this afternoon.
Planning permission for the waste facility on a 30-acre site at Ringaskiddy, Co Cork was rejected by Cork County Council on June 26th last.
Over 20,000 objections to the initial application were lodged with Cork County Council, with a large number of appeals submitted to An Bord Pleanála by the residents of the harbour area. Anti-incinerator campaigners, Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment remain opposed to the proposed incinerator and say they will go to the High Court and European Court if the appeal is granted.
Meanwhile, Indaver Ireland insists the Ringaskiddy site is a good one, and that the incinerator could not go ahead without various safeguards in-built into its operation.
The company prepared a comprehensive 200-page submission, for the appeals board.
