The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) denied yesterday it was behind the action taken by farmers at Dunnes Stores across the State, where loaded trolleys of food were left blocking aisles and check-outs in the milk war protest.

The protests by milk producers took place at Dunnes outlets in Navan, Tralee, Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Ballina, Portlaoise, Drogheda and Cork city. Farmers had loaded the trolleys with food, and proceeded to the check-outs where they asked check-out staff if the milk had been imported.

They then refused to pay for the goods on the basis that they had been "unaware" that the milk they had intended to buy was imported. The farmers, who said they were milk producers, promised more action at stores over the coming days.

A spokesman for the IFA denied that it was attempting to arrange a boycott of Dunnes Stores.
