The bride's white veil may have been the only conventional element of yesterday's wedding between homeless couple Joanne Smith (24) of Manchester and Joseph Nessan (38) of Dublin, but it looks like they may still live happily ever after.

The pair met two years ago while sleeping rough in St Stephen's Green. Ms Smith has been homeless for two and a half years and Mr Nessan has been homeless off and on for the last 15 years.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Royston Brady, heard about the engaged couple and offered the Mansion House for a wedding reception.

"As the Lord Mayor, I have a budget for entertainment. They're entitled to it as much as any group I'm bringing in," he said.

Ms Smith and Mr Nessan had "his and hers" dyed hair - orange for him, pink for her.

Even their dog had a little pink stripe on his head.

The bride wore a pink camisole top, black mini-skirt and fishnet tights. The groom wore a black leather jacket and biker boots.

They tied the knot at the registry office before arriving at the Mansion House in a limousine. They were overwhelmed by friends, onlookers and a media barrage, but looked happy and affectionate.

About 40 of their friends and YMCA volunteers attended the reception, which included finger food, wine and a pianist. The couple's cake was decorated with a face and, of course, pink frosting hair.

Ms Smith said they are honeymooning in Cork, and they left yesterday by train. Honeymoon accommodations were donated.

Once they return, they will also have a place to live.

Cllr Brady said Dublin City Council has arranged housing for the couple in the city centre.
