Glenn Hoddle is devastated at being sacked as manager by Tottenham Hotspur, according to his coaching assistant, John Gorman.
Gorman's departure was also announced by the club yesterday, after their worst start to a premier league season has left Spurs 18th from after a 3-1 home defeat by Southampton on Saturday.
"Obviously, Glenn is absolutely devastated," Gorman, also a former Spurs player, told BBC radiotoday. "He is Tottenham through and through and we have both worked extremely hard and you just want to be successful.
"Glenn played so many years here and had got so much pride in his work. We wanted to give the Spurs fans success and joy and we never really achieved that. We would have loved to have given them success but it hasn't happened."
Hoddle, who was idolised by Spurs fans during his playing career and hailed on his return as manager in the spring of 2001, was dismissed for what the club called unacceptable results and prospects - despite spending some £12 million sterling on new players in the close season.
Spurs have won just three of their last 16 league matches, and Saturday's 3-1 dekeat to Southampton was their third in succession after losses to Fulham and Chelsea.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness, and Charlton Athletic's Alan Curbishley, along with former Barcelona chief Radomir Antic, were being touted as his possible replacement by British media this morning.
David Pleat, the club's director of football, has taken over as caretaker manager as the squad prepare for Wednesday's League Cup second round tie at first division Coventry City.
