Leeds - Relatives of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster yesterday declared their legal case was at an end after a judge rejected their attempt to force a fresh trial of the police match commander on manslaughter charges.

Former chief supt David Duckenfield (55) walked from Leeds Crown Court with a heavy police escort after Mr Justice Hooper ordered a stay of proceedings against him.

The families' campaigner, Mr Trevor Hicks, said they were "bitterly disappointed" at the decision - but they would abide by it. Relatives of the 96 Liverpool supporters who died, sobbed and comforted each other at the end of their 11-year campaign.
