GARDA representatives are expected to oppose some proposals put forward by the Minister for Justice, Mrs Owen, to resolve the internal Garda dispute, when they meet in conference today in Limerick.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) is holding a one-day conference to discuss measures contained in an amendment to the Garda Siochana Bill, introduced in the Dail last month by Mrs Owen.

It is understood the conference is likely to reject, at least some of the proposals for restructuring the reconstitution of the association.

The proposals being opposed, include a provision that the paid management of the association be excluded from its central executive committee; that five non-executive trustees be appointed to oversee its finances; that the Garda College, with only 60 members, no longer has a representative on the central executive; and the dropping of the GRA's insistence that gardai who left the association have to pay full subscription arrears.
