Liverpool 1 Man Utd 2
Two goals from Ryan Giggs gave Manchester United their third straight league win over their bitterest rivals to maintain their Barclaycard Premiership title challenge.
Liverpool were on top in the first half without creating a serious chance, but United took a grip after the break and Giggs scored twice in 12 minutes. Liverpool hit back with a Harry Kewell effort but could not find an equaliser - although Emile Heskey missed a gilt-edged chance in injury time.
Anthony Le Tallec replaced Diouf, and with both French teenagers on the pitch, Liverpool found some fight.
They pulled a goal back in the 75th minute when Sinama-Pongolle's clever chipped overhead kick from the byline was neatly sidefooted home by Kewell.
Then Pongolle got through the middle and was baulked by Rio Ferdiand, but referee Graham Poll waved away appeals for a penalty. In injury time Heskey swung at a Murphy pass, missed and fell over, leaving Liverpool holding their heads in disbelief.
