Georgian Foreign Minister Irakly Menagarishvili resigned today and has been replaced by his first deputy, Mr Merab Antadze.
Mr Amiran Kavadze, second deputy foreign minister, declined to comment on the reasons for Mr Menagarishvili's departure.
It comes five days after veteran Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze was ousted by popular protests.
The experienced foreign minister, in office since December 1995, was a close ally of Mr Shevardnadze, best known in the West for his role in ending the Cold War while Soviet foreign minister.
