A garda who received serious head injuries and suffered post-concussional syndrome after being assaulted outside the Garda station in Portlaoise, Co Laois, was awarded more than £80,000 damages at the High Court yesterday.

Garda Kieran Keyes had sued the Minister for Finance under the Garda Compensation Acts arising from the incident on the night of March 27th, 1994.

The court heard that Garda Keyes was hit on the head by an assailant and knocked to the ground when a motorcycle fell on top of him. He was out of work for seven months.

Damages of £75,000 and costs were awarded to Garda Keyes and £6,082 was allowed for special damages, including medical costs.
