Galway do just enough for Connacht title

Galway 1-11 Sligo 0-11

Galway clinched their 41st Connacht title today after victory over Sligo at McHale Park, Castlebar.

The reigning All-Ireland champions played controlled but bland football and were rarely threatened despite a Sligo fight-back late in the game.

The game was marred somewhat by the number of controversial refereeing decisions which contributed to the tedious stop-start pattern of the match.

Galway were flattered by their six point (1-7 to 0-4) advantage at the break. They played conservatively in the opening period but got a lucky break on 32 minutes when Derek Savage converted a penalty after captain Padraig Joyce was fouled in the area.

Sligo rallied in the second period and points from David Durkin, Gerry McGowan and Dessie Sloyane put just three points between the sides with minutes to play.

But Galway picked off scores throughout the half through Michael Donnellan, Joyce, Kevin Walsh and Matthew Clancy and those scores afforded them the cushion for victory.
