The funeral of the woman who died having apparently contracted Legionnaires' Disease while receiving treatment at Waterford Regional Hospital for another serious illness took place yesterday, writes Carol Duffy
The life of Mrs Ena Kiely (61), Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford, and formerly of Ballingarry, Co Limerick, was recalled amid tearful scenes at Mass in Stradbally Church. Father Connie Kelleher led the community in prayer, as the grieving Kiely family were supported by relatives and friends.
The chief mourners included her husband, Éamonn, and the couple's children: Paula, Peter, Gillian, Edwin, Avena, Ray and Derry - a professional at Faithlegg Golf Club in Waterford; and Mrs Kiely's mother, Mrs Delia Daly.
Derry Kiely also played inter-county football for Waterford at minor, under-21 and senior level, while he was a member of the Waterford team that won the All-Ireland junior football title in 1998.
As the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Oliver Clery (PD), called on public health doctors to end their industrial action, an investigation into Mrs Kiely's death was continuing at Waterford Regional Hospital yesterday.
