Four tourists, including alittle girl, died and 11 were injured when several cable carsfell to the ground in the Himalayan town of Darjeeling onSunday, a police official said.
"Three cars crashed down about 150 feet (45 metres) due toa mechanical defect in the cable," Sanjay Chander,superintendent of police in the eastern Indian town ofDarjeeling, told journalists. "Nearly 50 tourists havebeen rescued."
The 2.5 km-long cable-car line has 15 cars.
Darjeeling, famous for quality tea, is 700 kmnorth of Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal state.
