London - Three men and a woman drowned yesterday in a canal boat accident in a lock in the Yorkshire Dales, writes Rachel Donnelly. The four people, who were disabled, were on an outing from a local day centre with four other people when police were alerted to the scene of a sinking barge on the Leeds-Liverpool canal near Skipton, north Yorkshire.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the barge began to sink shortly before 3 p.m. after it was apparently in collision with another barge using the lock.
