The family - a father, a mother and two teenagers - were deported back to the Czech Republic at the weekend after being arrested and questioned by gardaí .
A Garda source in Tuam confirmed that members of the force had carried out the arrests in the Glenamaddy area in association with officials of the Department of Justice, and the family was deported on foot of a deportation order issued by the Department.
It is understood the family have been living in Ireland illegally for less than two years, and some of them had been working in the north Galway area.
One garda said if it had been next May, after the Czech Republic becomes a member of the EU, this type of deportation might not have taken place, but under the present laws the family was not entitled to stay.
Meanwhile, the Traveller mayor of Tuam, Cllr Martin Ward, is continuing his campaign so a young Nigerian man can stay in Ireland. The man fled Nigeria after his business partner was murdered. He is awaiting a decision by the Department of Justice on his appeal of a decision to refuse him refugee status.
