The family of a young Cork woman who was killed and raped near her home in October 2000, have said they are "deeply disappointed" at the leniency of the sentence imposed on their daughter's killer.
Ian Horgan was sentenced to eight years, six of which were suspended today, after he was found guilty of the rape and manslaughter of 22 year-old beautician Rachel Kiely in October, 2000.
Horgan (22), of Innismore Square, Ballincollig, Co Cork, was found guilty of the rape, but not guilty of the murder of Ms Kiely at the Regional Park in Ballincollig.
Horgan had already served over four years in prison after he was originally convicted of the murder and rape of Rachel Kiely in 2002. However, he had his convictions set aside by the Court of Criminal Appeal which ordered a retrial.
A jury of seven men and five women returned a majority verdict to rape following more than four hours' deliberation. He had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
The court heard that Rachel Kiely, a member of the Jehovah Witness community, went missing after taking her dogs for a walk in the park on the evening of the day in question.
Following an extensive search her body was discovered on rough ground near to the ruins of an old building.
Forensic evidence showed that the DNA of semen found on the death woman's body matched that of Ian Horgan .
State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy said in her report that Rachel Kiely had died as a result of pressure being applied to her neck.
