Nicosia - Thirty-five people have died in the past three days from the heatwave that has been broiling Cyprus, the Health Minister, Mr Christos Solomis, said yesterday.

Twenty people died in the previous 24 hours, the minister said on state television.

Michael Jansen writes: Daily temperatures have averaged 41 to 42 Centigrade in Nicosia, sweltering in the Mesaoria plain at the island's centre, and 2 to 5 lower in coastal areas. Water levels in dams and reservoirs have fallen to 10 per cent of capacity. The situation is even worse in the Palestinian territories where water sources remain under Israeli control.
