Sven-Goran Eriksson faces an anxious wait to see if England skipper David Beckham will be available for the crunch Euro 2004 qualifier with Turkey on October 11th.
The former Manchester United midfielder injured his right foot in Real Madrid's loss to Valencia on Saturday night.
Beckham landed heavily on the foot, bruising the instep, after the studs in his left boot caught in the turf as he took a free-kick late on in the 2-0 defeat.
He is almost certainly out of Wednesday's Champions League encounter with Porto, although the player himself was playing his cards close to his chest.
He said: "It's hard to tell because it's the first day after the game, it's hurting at the moment and we'll have to wait and see.
"I've got a couple of days to recover - I hope it will be okay but I'm not sure."
After the Porto game, the last match Beckham can play in before the international break is against Espanyol in the Primera Liga next Sunday.
And, asked whether he thought he would be available for the match in Istanbul next month, the England skipper replied: "I really don't know.
"I`m not sure if I`ll be fit for Wednesday, that's up to the doctors and me to decide. Turkey is two weeks away and we have got a lot of important games before then."
Meanwhile, Beckham hinted he would like to take on the central midfield role he fills with Real Madrid at international level.
Beckham has developed into the central engine room of the Real side and agreed it would be a good idea if England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson allowed him to do the same for his country.
"I've enjoyed playing in the middle for Madrid and I hope to stay there," said Beckham, who is rapidly adapting to life in Spain.
Beckham also explained his visit to a Madrid nightclub after last week's game against Malaga - which has received huge coverage in the press - was simply a way of winding down after the game.
"I always sleep poorly after any game because I'm so hyped up," he said. "Last night [after the Valencia match] I didn't sleep until six o'clock."
