Most of the 74 workers at the Nuvotem factory in Crolly, west Donegal, have been told they are going on short time work from next weekend. The employees at the plant, which manufactures electronic transformers and other components, hope normal working may resume before the end of the year.
The company has blamed the introduction of short-time working on a slump in orders in recent months from both the European and worldwide markets. A spokesman, Mr Timmy Boyle, said most of the production workers would be affected but that sales staff would remain on a full working week.
Last week, 30 jobs were lost at the GoIreland Internet tourist service company in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, while last month 85 workers lost their jobs with the closure of the Herdman's textile plant in Ballybofey.
Another yarn plant in the county, Snath Comer Teo in Derrybeg, has introduced short time working. The plant will close for a week in November and December, having already shut for a week in October. The 190 staff at that plant are affected due to a drop in US orders.
