Ulster Unionist MP Mr Jeffrey Donaldson, at the centre of a row with his party leader, Mr David Trimble, and other colleagues, urged them yesterday to heal the rift in the party.
With the UUP facing another potentially divisive party officers' meeting today, Mr Donaldson appealed to pro-Belfast Agreement colleagues not to try again to suspend him and other MPs for defying the leadership.
In a legal defeat for Mr Trimble on Monday, Mr Donaldson, South Belfast MP the Rev Martin Smyth, and South Antrim MP David Burnside successfully overturned in the High Court their suspension from the party.
Mr Donaldson said: "Further disciplinary action is not the way to deal with the party's problems.
"Following the High Court ruling that the previous action was unlawful, I would say this has caused a lot of damage to the party's credibility. Now is the time for party officers to reflect on that.
"Instead of going down the road of further action, steps must be taken to address the problems in the Ulster Unionist Party, and especially the concerns of the three MPs, half of the party and 70 per cent of the unionist electorate about the direction of the party."
The three MPs incurred the wrath of the leadership by resigning the party whip at Westminster last month over party policy on the peace process.
Earlier, it was confirmed one of Mr Donaldson's closest allies, Ms Arlene Foster, would be remaining on the party officers' team after tendering her resignation as honorary secretary over attempts to discipline the MPs.
Mr Smyth, the UUP president, said he had only received her letter of resignation on Monday, and had persuaded her to stay on after the High Court judgment went his way.
"Arlene is a bright and articulate advocate for unionism who has much to offer this party."
Meanwhile, former deputy leader Lord Kilcloney has appealed to both sides.
"I believe it is possible to avoid disciplinary committees, to avoid court cases and, more seriously, if we continue to go down this route, we could end up having to expel several unionist constituency associations."
