An unemployed Waterford man has appeared in court charged with taking Kilkenny hurling star D. J. Carey's car

An unemployed Waterford man has appeared in court charged with taking Kilkenny hurling star D. J. Carey's car. The 21-year-old was also charged with taking €2,000 which was in the car.

Mr John McGrath from Birchwood, Waterford city, is charged that on August 20th at Crookstown Motors, Kildare, he took a BMW without Mr Carey's consent, contrary to section 112 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and with stealing €2,000 from the car on the same date, contrary to section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

In the course of the brief hearing at Waterford District Court yesterday, Det Garda Aidan Slattery said he arrested the accused at Waterford Garda station on October 3rd, charged and cautioned him. Mr McGrath had nothing to say, he told Judge William Harnett.

Det Garda Slattery released Mr McGrath to appear in court yesterday morning. He told Judge Harnett that he re-arrested him again yesterday morning and when he was cautioned Mr McGrath again had nothing to say.

Defence solicitor Mr Martin O'Carroll said his client was not working and his request for free legal aid was granted.

Mr McGrath is due back in court again on November 14th when the court will have a direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions on the case.
