Discount store to create 240 jobs in Derry

Derry was given an employment boost tonight with the announcement that more than 200 jobs are to be created in the city.

Discount store Makro is to open a new cash-and-carry centre at Maydown, employing 240 people.

SDLP leader and Foyle constituency representative, Mr Mark Durkan, welcomed the announcement as providing a "timely and significant boost for our local economy, coming as it does against the backdrop of more than 1,000 job losses in the North West over recent months."

Meanwhile a call centre on the nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown, Co Armagh is to close.

Answercall Direct is to switch work to a state-of-the art £7.3 million centre which it opened a few miles away in Armagh city in the spring.

The company said it would provide transport to ferry the Portadown workers to Armagh.

Answercall Direct, set up by local businesswoman Ms Kelsy Buck in 1999, employs around 375 workers, nearly 100 of which currently work in Portadown.
