Nearly 300 workers became redundant today following the closure of the last Desmonds & Sons' manufacturing plant in Northern Ireland.

The decision to close the plant at Newbuildings, just outside Derry, and a subsidiary unit at Springtown was based on significant competition from low-cost overseas operators in the sector.

Some 293 people have lost their jobs. Up to last year Desmonds employed nearly 2,000 people at eight factories across Northern Ireland, all of which have since closed.

In the summer five Desmonds  factories closed down.
