Derry City councillors are to be asked to back controversial plans for a major multi-million pound expansion at the city's airport, it was confirmed tonight.
The plan has sparked controversy because it is likely to mean the demolition of some 15 houses at Orchardstown to make way for the runway extension.
The council has written to people on the Donnybrewer Road confirming their homes and businesses may have to be purchased to make way for the runway.
Mr Ciaran O'Brian, whose home and business are closest to the runway, said he would "fight to the end" to preserve his property.
The overall strategic development plans consists of two major projects, the first including the runway extension and the second at a later stage, including investment in the terminal and car park facilities.
Cllr William Hay, chairman of the City of Derry Airport Committee, said members of the committee had received a series of reports that outlined the risks and opportunities associated with the long-term investment in the airport infrastructure.
Mr Hay said the committee was "aware of and sensitive to" a range of issues involved, particularly those facing residents of the area.
He said the committee would be meeting with the residents next week to share information from technical consultants on what it will mean to them. PA
