The Defence Forces' representative group, PDFORRA, will vote today on whether to take industrial action over the proposal to cut 400 positions.
At yesterday's annual conference, the PDFORRA national executive was urged to draw up an action plan to fight the reductions, which it is claimed are contrary to the White Paper on defence.
It is unlikely that any industrial action would involve a strike.
However, armed escorts for prisoners and the transportation of large amounts of cash could be withdrawn in what would likely be low-key action begin with.
