Councillor opposes Dunleer plan

An attempt is to be made to invalidate the adoption last week by Louth County Council of a local area plan for Dunleer.

An attempt is to be made to invalidate the adoption last week by Louth County Council of a local area plan for Dunleer.

Fine Gael's Cllr Michael O'Dowd has said he is seeking a special meeting of the county council and will use a technical strategy to try to prevent the Dunleer plan from being implemented.

He aims to create a situation where the local area plan for Dunleer would not be in compliance with the superior County Development Plan and could therefore not be implemented.

Cllr O'Dowd, along with Mr Fergus O'Dowd TD, voted against the adoption of the Dunleer plan because it would allow for the village to grow to more than 4,000 people.

Cllr O'Dowd said he believed the development plan the council had passed contravenes the National Spatial Strategy and other guidelines.

He said he hoped to get the support of a majority of councillors, "because I do not believe Dunleer has the physical, social or economic infrastructure to support the kind of population growth proposed".

If the strategy proved successful, provisions in the Dunleer plan including the rezoning of lands, particularly 18 acres on the Trean Road, would be void.
